Ca' Val D'Ostreghe
Alessandra Scarpa
My name is Alessandra Scarpa and I feel like a daughter of Chioggia and its unmistakable amphibious world, at once terrestrial and marine. It is because of this inseparable and deep connection that I dreamed, imagined and gave birth to the Ca’ Val D’Ostreghe project. I named it Val d’Ostreghe, because my house bordered this very legendary place, the oldest inn in the city. A name for me filled with echoes and suggestions, bringing back an inexhaustible cascade of memories. So I would like to give my guests a special experience, made of emotions, new discoveries and well-being. An unforgettable experience and one to tell others about.Like the one that had struck the great writer Giovanni Comisso, who was in love with the ancient Val d’Ostreghe inn and trattoria, so much so that he could not stay away from it for long. In his wanderings around the world, Comisso therefore always returned to Chioggia and frequented Val d’Ostreghe. Until he drew inspiration from it for the masterpiece that is “Gente di mare,” conceived in 1922 on a sailing ship sailing along the Adriatic coast.
So, first of all, I was anxious to be faithful, in a line of consistent continuity, to that extraordinary history with which the walls of these streets of my wonderful, fascinating city of water are steeped. Because I believe that places breathe and pass on the events of men and remain impregnated with them forever. It is then up to the generations to come and to come, to be worthy of them. And to know how to reread, with care and dedication, the stories written on the lived-in surfaces of these old houses, but projected into the future.
Loyalty, then. And gratitude: to my family, which raised me to conviviality, sharing, and that sense of frank and loyal friendship, which is typically chioggiotto. And to this local community, with its values and commitment to hard work at sea.
Because literature helps us make life worth living and in Comisso’s pages there is all the love, respect and friendship for Chioggia and its people. The same pure, crystal-clear and authentic feelings that I wish I could convey in turn, welcoming with a smile those who knock on the door of my Val d’Ostreghe B&B.
